Using Our Sound Mat Videos at Home
At school, we use sound mats to help children recognise, practise and remember the sounds (phonemes) they need for reading and spelling. To support this learning at home, here are short sound mat videos that your child can watch and join in with.
Each video clearly models how to say each sound correctly and encourages children to practise saying the sounds aloud. This helps them to build confidence and develop accurate pronunciation, which is an important foundation for both reading and writing.

Why are sound mat videos helpful?

Consistency – The sounds are taught and pronounced in the same way as in school, helping children feel secure and confident.
Active learning – Saying the sounds out loud helps children remember them more effectively than just seeing them.
Confidence builder – Regular practice supports children who may be unsure and helps them feel successful.
Quick and easy – Videos are short, making them easy to fit into daily routines.
Supports blending and spelling – Strong sound recognition makes reading new words and spelling simpler.

How you can help at home

Watch the video with your child and encourage them to say each sound aloud.
Repeat little and often – short daily practice is very effective.
Praise effort rather than perfection to help build confidence.
Use the sounds in everyday activities, such as reading signs, books or writing simple words.

By using the sound mat videos little and often, you are helping your child build strong early reading and writing skills in a fun and supportive way. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home!
