House System

All pupils at Awel y Môr Primary School are assigned to one of four houses: Branwen, Gelert, Owain and Taliesin.

Throughout their time at Awel y Môr they will represent their houses in a variety of competitions and events. All houses have team colours and are worn on event days.

House Colour: Green/Gwyrdd

House Motto: Lead & Unite

Branwen ferch Llŷr (Branwen, daughter of Llŷr) is one of the main characters of the second of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi.

This epic tale of pride and jealousy begins when Matholwch, King of Ireland, comes to Harlech to marry Branwen.

House Colour: Red/Coch

House Motto: Courage & Faith

Gelert is a legendary hound in a Welsh folk-tale. He is associated with the village of Beddgelert in Gwynedd in north-west Wales, the name of which was formerly believed to mean “Gelert’s grave”.

This is the story of Prince Llewellyn and the tragic tale of him slaying his own loyal hound, thinking mistakenly that it had eaten his infant son.

House Colour: Yellow/Melyn

House Motto: Believe & Achieve

Owain ap Gruffydd (c. 1354 – 20 September 1415), commonly known as Owain Glyndŵr was a Welsh leader, soldier and military commander in the late Middle Ages, who led a 15-year-long Welsh revolt with the aim of ending English rule in Wales.

House Colour: Blue/Glas

House Motto: Imagine & Shine

Taliesin was a bard in Wales. He started life as Gwion Bach, but after an unfortunate mistake he was reborn again and cast out to sea.

Taliesin was credited for inspiring his Celtic countrymen to defeat the Saxons. His mother was Ceridwen the powerful witch.

The Shield Design Process

We invited a number of children to work with a parent and graphic designer Aaron Hill who offered his time and expertise. They discussed, designed and created four wonderful shields for our houses- Gwaith gwych pawb!
