Language Charter – Siarter Iaith
Currently, at Awel Y Môr, we are working together to achieve the Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus Bronze Award. We are working within a framework to achieve the aim of ensuring that our learners:
- are confident in using their Welsh language skills.
- foster positive attitudes towards the language.
- increase the use of the language inside and outside the school.
Pupil Voice- Llais Disgybl
At Awel Y Môr, we have our Tîm Ddraig made up of pupils across the school. Their role is to lead the charter and promote Welsh with their peers on a daily basis. They are also responsible for organising whole school events and activities for both pupils and staff.
This year, Tîm Ddraig have contributed to the planning and delivery of Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae, Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen, Dydd Miwsig Cymru and Dydd Gwyl Dewi. They have supported teachers and staff through delivering assemblies and suggesting ideas for whole school displays.
Enrichment – Cyfoethogi
This year, our Eisteddfod was a resounding success. The week before every pupil had the opportunity to take part in all competitions- reproduce work by a Welsh artist, clay modelling, poetry recitals, Croeso poster and story writing. Overall winners were Tŷ Glas and Emilia was crowned Bard for her fabulous dragon story- Llongyfarchiadau pawb!
Cynefin
‘Cynefin’ is a Welsh term defined by Curriculum for Wales as ‘the place where we feel we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar, and the sights and sounds are reassuringly recognisable.’ Every term, ‘Cynefin’ is planned for. As a school we feel this is so important as it allows us to personalise the curriculum for our pupils so that they can find meaningful connections within their learning made through their immediate surroundings.
We ensure our pupils have opportunities to develop a strong sense of their own identity and well-being, but also to develop an understanding of others’ identities and make connections with people, places and histories elsewhere in Wales and across the wider world.
As well as our Welsh celebrations and events, some of the classwork has been based on Seven Wonders of Wales, Black History of Wales and National Parks to name a few. We also explore our community, being curious and engaging with our local area whilst discovering, learning from and making comparisons with the wider world.
